Athlete digital doubles. For sports campaigns.

Keep the athlete recognisable when the campaign moves into a digital environment. Mimic Advertising can scope digital double creation, full-body motion capture and animation for sports campaign teams. The brief starts with the athlete’s likeness, the performance the scene needs and the files your creative or finishing partner will receive.

A campaign performance has to belong to the athlete

A sports digital double needs more than a face that looks right in a still. Body proportions, posture, timing and the relationship between an athlete and their kit all affect the result. Decide which movements are essential to the creative idea and which views will carry the likeness before choosing a capture and animation scope.

For a close shot, facial expression and hands may need their own review. For a larger performance, movement, contact and silhouette may be the main checks. Footwear, clothing and hair introduce further asset and simulation requirements. The shot plan should identify these needs early.

Digital doubles and motion capture within your production

The production contribution can cover the digital double, captured performance, animation or an agreed combination. A brand, agency or creative partner may own the wider campaign, compositing and media placement. Defining these boundaries makes the handoff useful to the team finishing the work.

Motion capture records performance data that can be cleaned and retargeted to the digital character. Animation review then checks how the performance reads in the intended camera and scene. A capture session alone does not guarantee that every planned action or final shot is covered.

Plan capture, likeness and performance reviews

1. Performance and permissions. Define the athlete, actions, shot plan and intended placements. Identify the authorised likeness reviewer and confirm permission for capture and the requested campaign use before scheduling production.

2. Capture planning. Review available scans or footage, wardrobe, footwear, movement references and any technical constraints. Agree which capture elements are required and how the digital asset must connect to the receiving pipeline.

3. Likeness review. Check the character’s face, body proportions, groom and kit in agreed views. Keep this review distinct from the creative approval of the finished shot.

4. Movement and delivery. Review retargeted performance and animation in context. Check contact, timing, body mechanics and any included hair or cloth behaviour. Deliver the agreed asset or animation package with naming, scale, dependencies and compatibility checks. Review rounds and capture arrangements remain subject to the production brief.

What to send with a sports advertising brief

Include the athlete, creative treatment, movement list, campaign deadline and planned shots. State which assets already exist and whether you need scanning, character build, motion capture, animation or a handoff to another studio.

Add camera references, wardrobe and footwear details, aspect ratios, delivery specifications and the person who can approve likeness. Include the intended US or UK placements and usage requirements. Confirm location and travel arrangements during scoping.

Questions from sports producers

Can you create a digital double from existing material? Share the scans, reference coverage and target shot list for assessment. The quality and completeness of the inputs determine what can be used and what needs further capture or production.

Do you provide the entire advertising campaign? The exact production role is agreed per brief. The two examples here identify Mimic Productions’ character and performance contributions within larger campaigns.

Can an athlete’s digital double be reused? Reuse depends on the permissions, approved uses and technical suitability of the asset. An existing campaign credit is not blanket permission for another campaign or placement.

How long does production take? Likeness complexity, capture needs, animation, simulations and approval availability affect scheduling. Supply the shot plan and deadline for a scoped schedule; the schedule is agreed for the project.
